Chelsea created history as they won the UEFA Conference League final with a 4-1 victory over Real Betis. Their triumph in Poland means they become the first team to win all of UEFA's club competitions after previously lifting the Champions League, Europa League, Super Cup and the now defunct Cup Winners' Cup.
Heading to Wroclaw with 23 players, Maresca made some big calls in regards to his team to face Betis as . Chelsea may have been red-hot favourites to get their hands on the trophy but it was Betis who took the lead courtesy of Abde Ezzalzouli's arrowed finish into the bottom corner.
The Blues then had Filip Jorgensen to thank shortly after for a one-handed save that stopped Marc Bartra finding the net from outside the box. Betis continued to cause big issues for the Blues, who in return failed to cause their opponents any bother at all when in the final third during the first period.
went up a gear or two after the restart and went close after half-time with a James shot that was deflected wide for a corner. Maresca's men were to get the goal they had been desperate for in the 65th minute as some magic from Cole Palmer put the ball on a plate for Enzo Fernandez to nod into the corner.
Palmer was then heavily involved again with some more outstanding work to tee up the returning Nicolas Jackson to head home from close range five minutes later. Chelsea were to wrap the game up in the final 10 minutes as Jadon Sancho found the top corner with a curling strike to ensure there was no way back for Betis, before Moises Caicedo added a fourth with a deflected strike from the edge of the box.
Here are five things we spotted on a historic night for Chelsea in Poland:
Enzo's big decisionsprung quite a surprise in terms of his centre-back partnership for the Europa League final. Having seen and Tosin Adarabioyo play a big part in Chelsea qualifying for the Champions League at Nottingham Forest last Sunday, the pair dropped down to the bench in Wroclaw.
Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah were the two players to come in at centre-back, with Malo Gusto also getting the nod over at right-back. Amid the disappointment of missing out, .
James and Colwill's absence from the team was certainly a talking point, especially as both are key players for the Blues. Former Chelsea ace Joe Cole was taken aback by the news.
"That is really, really interesting," he said on TNT Sports ahead of the final. "My eyes go to the centre-halves, [Trevoh] Chalobah and Badiashile together, I am not a big fan of mixing it.
"Levi Colwill has been playing very, very well. Tosin has come in and done okay as well. That is interesting, that really is. Reece James being on the bench as well, you know, experience on a big night.
"What you would say about Enzo is he's got it spot on in every time he has mixed the teams. But listen you can't pick a Chelsea team now, the squad is so strong you don't know who is going to start. There are always going to be a few talking points."
Caicedo's new lookhas stood out on the pitch for Chelsea this season with some huge performances in the middle of the park. It has been some season for the 23-year-old as he was recently crowned Chelsea's player of the season and players' player of the season at their awards night at the start of May.
. Ahead of the final, the Ecuadorian, who was also wearing a protective face mask, opted for a rather different look as he dyed his hair blonde for the big occasion.
A new look for the player and possibly a good luck charm going on the team's final success.
Gusto woeThe decision to go with over James in the Conference League final was a huge call by Maresca. It didn't take long at all for it to look like the wrong decision.
Gusto had a nightmare for Betis' opening goal after losing the ball in the middle of the park when trying to pick out Fernandez. The La Liga side took full advantage with Isco, who was toying with Chelsea at times, picking out Ezzalzouli with a delightful pass. The Moroccan had time and space in the area vacated by Gusto and he didn't pass up the chance to give his side a surprise lead.
The Chelsea right-back didn't really recover from that moment and he looked shaky when on the ball, notably when inverting inside. It wasn't a surprise at all to see Gusto replaced by James at the break as Chelsea looked to get back into the contest.
The half-time change proved crucial to the outcome of the contest with .
Palmer magicFernandez may have been the player who grabbed the headlines after restoring parity but deserves his flowers for creating the opportunity. Struggling at times this season and going through a barren run in front of goal, the youngster turned it on in the final when Chelsea needed him most after trailing 1-0 for almost an hour.
Chelsea's No.20 twisted substitute Jesus Rodriguez inside and out before whipping in a pinpoint delivery that Fernandez couldn't miss. Palmer was again instrumental to Chelsea's second goal of the night as he once again tormented Rodriguez.
The Betis teenager just couldn't deal with his opponent's trickery and footwork, with a sharp turn allowing him to get away before crossing for Jackson to put them ahead for the first time in the contest. Big players always step up on the biggest of occasions. That's exactly what Palmer did.
Sancho's parting gift? There was to be no start in the final for but he had a big say on the final result with a superb strike in the 83rd minute. Gaining possession of the ball after fellow substitute Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had played it into his path, the winger took three touches before shifting the ball on to his right foot and curling it into the top corner.
His goal sparked wild scenes in Wroclaw as it ensured Chelsea would get their hands on the European trophy that had been missing from their collection. .
That is for Chelsea to decide over the coming weeks or months. If he is to leave then he will have bowed out in the perfect way.
If not, he will be looking to create even more history in a Chelsea shirt.
