‘Captain Cool’ is a phrase fans have associated with MS Dhoni for a long time due to his calm manner on the field. Be it as skipper or as a player, Dhoni’s cool head often made the difference between victory and defeat. Now that phrase will be something he can trademark. The Trademark Registry of India has accepted and published Dhoni’s application to trademark the phrase, as per ESPNCricinfo.
The ApplicationDhoni had filed the application back in 2023. It was accepted on June 16 this year, just days after he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. If there is no objection by a third party within 120 days of its acceptance, the trademark will be granted.

When Dhoni had filed the application two years ago, another company, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited, had already registered the trademark 'Captain Cool'. Dhoni had then filed a rectification petition. He claimed that the other company wanted to exploit his brand with the popularity of ‘Captain Cool’.
"This is a case of bad faith registration on the part of the company, aimed at deceiving the public and unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual," the application stated. It was accepted after at least four hearings.

Dhoni’s fans were certainly happy that he was using ‘Captain Cool’ as a trademark. Many speculated what the product was while some clarified that the trademark was filed under categories related to sports training, coaching, and the provision of sports training facilities and services.

Dhoni was last seen in action during IPL 2025 where CSK finished last for the first time in the 16 seasons they have played. Under Dhoni CSK have won five IPL titles and two CLT20 trophies. As Team India skipper, Dhoni led the Men in Blue to a T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy. He was also at the helm when India became No. 1 in Tests for the first time.
The legend played his last international in 2019. He turns 44 this year and there is a chance he will take part in IPL 2026. He’s been around since the tournament began in 2008. Fans hope he comes back for one last throw of the dice as CSK look to regain lost glory.
