Delhi Capitals (DC) dominated proceedings for most of the first innings before a late onslaught from Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir helped Mumbai Indians (MI) finish on 180/5 in their 20 overs in match 63 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
The surface at the Wankhede Stadium appeared sluggish from the outset. However, the new ball came nicely onto the bat. Rohit Sharma was dismissed cheaply by Mustafizur Rahman, but Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks hit a flurry of boundaries inside the powerplay. However, the two overseas players for MI departed in consecutive overs as MI slumped to 58/3.
Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav batted cautiously, trying to set a platform for the batters to follow. There was turn on offer for DC spinners and Vipraj Nigam while Mustafizur and Mukesh Kumar used the slower deliveries to good effect as Suryakumar and Tilak failed to up the ante in their 55-run partnership off 49 balls.
After Tilak was dismissed for a run-a-ball 27, MI skipper Hardik Pandya could only manage three runs. MI huffed and puffed to 132/5 in 18 overs. However, the tide turned as Mukesh conceded 27 runs off the penultimate over, with Naman doing the bulk of the damage. The Punjab batter slammed two sixes and as many boundaries in the over, which started with Suryakumar getting to his half-century off 36 balls with a six over extra cover.
In the last over, bowled by Dushmantha Chameera, Suryakumar hit two fours and sixes.as MI amassed 48 runs in the last two overs to get to what seemed an improbable total at one stage. Mukesh bagged two wickets, but the last over spoiled his figures. He conceded 48 runs in his four-over spell. Chameera, Kuldeep, and Mustafizur chipped in with one wicket apiece.
Suryakumar finished not out on 73 off 43 balls, belting seven fours and four maximums. Naman also plundered 24 runs off eight balls in his unbeaten knock.
