Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX and Tesla, has expressed serious concern over Japan’s rapidly declining population. In a recent post on the platform X (previously known as Twitter), Musk highlighted that Japan is expected to lose close to a million people in 2024 alone. He noted that the country’s demographic challenges have been developing for nearly fifty years and clarified that artificial intelligence has no role in causing this situation. Instead, Musk suggested that AI might be the only possible solution to reverse the trend.
"Japan will lose almost a million people this year. This demographic inevitably was set in motion half a century ago and has nothing to do with AI. AI is the only hope for turning this around..." he wrote on X.
Musk’s remarks came in response to a post that underscored the alarming demographic gap Japan is facing—with 900,000 more deaths than births recorded this year. He has consistently drawn attention to the global issue of population decline, particularly in countries like Japan that are seeing a sharp drop in birth rates.
This is not the first time Musk has spoken out about the dangers of shrinking populations. As a father of 14 children with five different women, he often points to his personal life as an example of how he’s contributing to the demographic solution. He recently dismissed the idea of overpopulation, calling it one of the most destructive myths ever perpetuated. Musk believes that declining birth rates pose a serious risk to human civilization, especially in nations with aging populations.
In earlier posts, Musk argued that population collapse represents a far greater threat to humanity than climate change. While he acknowledges that global warming is a critical issue, he insists that the risk posed by a dwindling population is even more urgent. Back in 2022, he warned that low fertility rates could lead to societal collapse and urged the world to take the issue seriously.
In June this year, Musk reiterated his stance by emphasizing that people who want to maintain population stability should aim to have at least three children. Without this, he warned, the global population could spiral downward, with irreversible consequences for future generations.
