In India, the use of incense sticks and dhoop is common during pujas and religious rituals. Their fragrance not only purifies the home environment but also provides peace of mind. But did you know that burning incense sticks daily can be more dangerous for your lungs than smoking cigarettes? Recent research has found that incense smoke releases harmful particles and chemicals into the air, which gradually damage your breathing and lungs.
How does incense smoke become toxic?
According to experts, the smoke emitted from burning incense sticks contains microscopic particles such as PM 2.5, PM 10, and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). These are so small that they easily reach deep into the lungs. When this smoke accumulates daily in a closed home environment, it increases the risk of respiratory problems like inflammation, cough, asthma, and allergies.
An international study found that burning incense sticks can increase PM 2.5 levels in a room several times higher than the World Health Organization's (WHO) safe limit. Long-term exposure increases the risk of diseases like bronchitis, COPD, and lung cancer.
Which parts are most affected?
Incense smoke affects not only the lungs but also many other parts of the body. It can cause eye irritation, sore throat, sinus problems, and frequent sneezing. Chemicals like benzene and formaldehyde present in the smoke directly damage blood cells and lung alveoli. This slows oxygen circulation in the body and increases breathing difficulties.
Experts say that the elements in incense smoke are the same as those found in cigarette smoke—meaning that even after quitting smoking, you may still be unknowingly exposed to the same pollution.
How to Protect Your Lungs from Incense Smoke
There's no need to completely stop the tradition of burning incense sticks, but it's important to exercise caution when using them.
Whenever you light incense sticks at home or in a temple, keep windows and doors open to allow the smoke to escape.
If possible, keep a fan running to maintain air circulation.
Avoid lighting incense sticks repeatedly—light them only on special occasions or for short periods.
A better option for health is to use a ghee lamp or a natural essential oil diffuser. These not only make your home fragrant but are also safe for your health.
Keep in mind that while maintaining the sanctity and positive energy of worship is equally important, protecting your health is also crucial. Use incense sticks sparingly—as fragrant as they are, they can also silently harm your lungs.
