Who doesn't love the shiny apples you find in the market? But did you know that this shine isn't just natural? Often, apples are coated with a wax coating to keep them fresh longer and enhance their beauty.
This wax, while somewhat food-grade, may contain pesticide residues and sometimes even harmful substances. Simply washing with plain water doesn't completely remove this sticky layer of wax. Therefore, it's crucial to ensure that apples are chemical- and wax-free before eating them with the peel.
Warm Water and a Gentle Scrub
This is the easiest and most basic method for removing wax from apples. The wax melts when heated, making it easier to remove. For this, fill a bowl with lukewarm water and soak the apples in it for 1 to 2 minutes.
Using a soft vegetable brush or sponge, gently scrub the apples. Then, rinse them under clean running water and wipe them dry with a cloth. This loosens the wax layer and dirt.
The Magic Solution of Baking Soda
Baking soda is considered to be very effective in removing wax and pesticides. It is a natural cleaner. To try this remedy, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 liter of clean water and prepare a solution.
Soak the apples in this solution for about 10 to 15 minutes. Afterward, gently scrub the apples and rinse them thoroughly with plain water. This method is very effective in removing both wax and pesticides.
Clean with Vinegar
White vinegar is another excellent home remedy, which, due to its acidic nature, helps dissolve the wax layer. Mix 50% vinegar and 50% water in a container. Soak the apples in this mixture for about 10 minutes. Finally, rinse with plain water and dry. Vinegar is effective in removing both germs and wax.
Salt Water Remedy
Salt water not only helps remove wax, but it can also kill bacteria. Dissolve 1 to 2 tablespoons of salt in warm water. Soak the apples in this salt water for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, remove the apples, gently scrub them, and rinse them with clean water.
Lemon and Baking Soda Power-Combo
Lemon juice dissolves wax, while baking soda removes pesticides. This is a dual-power method. Take a little baking soda, add a few drops of lemon juice, and a little water to form a thick paste or a mild slurry. Apply this paste directly to the apples with your fingers or a soft cloth and rub it in gently. Then, after 2 minutes, rinse the apples thoroughly under running water.
