In a bid to modernize public transport, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is planning to introduce 3,000 "Smart Buses" equipped with advanced technology soon. Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik announced the initiative during a meeting with bus manufacturers on Thursday.
The new fleet, including the iconic "Lalpari" buses, will feature AI-based surveillance cameras, GPS tracking, LED TVs, Wi-Fi, breath analyzers, anti-theft systems, and foam-based fire safety mechanisms. These upgrades aim to improve passenger safety, comfort, and service punctuality.
Keeping passenger safety and security in mind, the minister emphasized that these will be top priorities. CCTV cameras will be installed in all buses to monitor onboard activities and driver behavior — described as the "third eye" — to prevent any untoward incidents. Additionally, buses parked at depots and terminals will be secured with systems that ensure they remain fully shut when not in service.
LED Screens for Important Updates
The new buses will also be equipped with LED screens that not only display advertisements but also broadcast important news updates and urgent messages from the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, and other authorities. LED panels will also be mounted on the exterior of the buses for advertising purposes, generating additional revenue for MSRTC.
Advanced Fire Prevention Systems
With rising temperatures leading to an increase in fire incidents aboard buses, MSRTC plans to install advanced fire suppression systems. These systems will automatically detect and extinguish any fire outbreaks in the bus, thereby significantly enhancing passenger safety.
The introduction of this advanced technology is expected to reduce road accidents, improve schedule adherence, and overall make MSRTC a truly "smart" transport service. Expressing his confidence, Minister Sarnaik said, "With these innovations, MSRTC will genuinely become smart in the near future."
