EFL star hit with suspended ban and fine amid betting breaches as FA release statement

Walsall player, Jamie Jellis, has been banned for five months after admitting betting offences by the Football Association (FA). The midfielder placed 2,248 bets on football matches between 30 April 2019 and 4 July 2023.

The ban has been suspended for 12 months - after the former Tamworth midfielder admitted the charge. An FA statement read: "An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Walsall's Jamie Jellis for misconduct in relation to breaches of The FA's betting rules.

"It was alleged that the midfielder breached FA Rule E1(b) by placing 2,248 bets on football matches between 30 April 2019 and 04 July 2023 - and he subsequently admitted that charge. The Regulatory Commission imposed a five-month suspension from all football and football-related activity, which is suspended for 12 months, a £1,200 fine and warning after a hearing."

Walsall have responded to the judgement with their own statement - posted on the club's website. "The FA has issued the following statement on Jamie Jellis: 'An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Walsall’s Jamie Jellis for misconduct in relation to breaches of The FA's betting rules.

"It was alleged that the midfielder breached FA Rule E1(b) by placing 2,248 bets on football matches between 30 April 2019 and 04 July 2023 - and he subsequently admitted that charge. The Regulatory Commission imposed a five-month suspension from all football and football-related activity, which is suspended for 12 months, a £1,200 fine and warning after a hearing.

"We would like to thank the PFA for their support of Jamie and the club during this process. The club will make no further comment on this matter."

The suspension comes after two other EFL players were charged with similar betting offences. Notts County's Lewis Macari and AFC Wimbledon's Osman Foyo were both charged over the summer.
