Diwali is a festival of joy, lights, and sweets, but it also brings smoke, noise, and indulgence, which can pose risks for pregnant women. Experts advise expecting mothers to take extra care during the celebrations to protect their health and that of the unborn child.

1. Avoid Firecrackers and Smoke
Firecrackers release smoke and chemicals that increase air pollution. These airborne particles can cause breathing problems in pregnant women and may impact the baby. Dr. Ajay Kumar of Delhi MCD advises pregnant women to stay indoors during Diwali. If going out is unavoidable, wear a mask and consult a doctor immediately if you experience any breathing issues.

2. Limit Sweets and Fried Foods
Pregnant women can enjoy sweets in moderation, but excessive consumption can raise blood sugar levels and increase the risk of gestational diabetes, especially in those who are overweight or have a family history of diabetes. Avoid overeating fried or spicy foods and maintain a balanced diet. Drink at least 8–10 glasses of water daily to stay hydrated.

3. Avoid Stress and Fatigue
Festival preparations, cleaning, and hosting guests can be exhausting. Pregnant women should prioritize rest and adequate sleep. Practice deep breathing, meditation, and seek family support. Avoid strenuous activities and consult your doctor before undertaking any physically demanding tasks.

By following these precautions, pregnant women can celebrate Diwali safely, enjoying the festivities without compromising their health or that of their baby.
