A deeply tragic incident has come to light from Hamirpur district in Uttar Pradesh, where a farmer died by suicide after reportedly being subjected to threats and public humiliation. The case has raised serious concerns about mental health, social pressure, and the misuse of intimidation.
The incident occurred in Bachrauli village, located in the Kurara police station area. The deceased, 50-year-old Raghuveer Singh, was a well-regarded and prosperous farmer in the village.
Allegations and ReportAccording to preliminary reports, Raghuveer had a dispute with a local woman who subsequently filed a molestation complaint against him at the police station. Following the complaint, the police visited the village and asked Raghuveer to appear at the station the next morning for inquiry.
However, his room remained closed the next morning. When family members forced the door open, they found him unresponsive. He had died by suicide.
Alleged Threat and Extortion ClaimThe farmer’s nephew, Ajay, told the police that after the officers had left the house the previous evening, the woman involved in the complaint allegedly arrived with a group of people. She reportedly demanded ₹10 lakh, warning that failure to pay would result in further legal action and public humiliation. According to Ajay, she allegedly threatened to blacken his uncle’s face and parade him around the village wearing a garland of shoes.
Family members believe that this pressure led Raghuveer to take the extreme step later that night.
Police Investigation UnderwayThe local police reached the scene promptly, secured the body, and sent it for postmortem examination. Station in-charge Nandram Prajapati confirmed the suicide and stated that an investigation is ongoing based on the family’s complaint. He added that appropriate legal action will be taken against anyone found responsible for abetment.
This incident underscores the urgent need for sensitive handling of disputes and greater mental health awareness in rural communities.
