Diabetes Control in Summer: At this time the heat is at its peak and in this season sugar patients have to work hard to control diabetes. Due to extreme heat, the sugar level of many patients increases a lot, while the sugar level of some people also decreases. Both conditions are not good for health. We will try to know from the doctor why there is a fluctuation in sugar levels in summer and how it can be avoided.
Dr. Sonia Rawat, Director of the Preventive Health and Wellness Department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, said that the summer season is very challenging for diabetes patients. The increased temperature in summer affects the metabolic process of the body, due to which the functioning of insulin can also change. When there is excessive sweating from the body, the amount of electrolytes and water in the body starts decreasing. Due to this, the blood sugar level can suddenly fluctuate. This makes it difficult to control the sugar level.
The doctor said that in summer, water and minerals come out of the body in the form of sweat, which can cause dehydration. Dehydration can prove to be dangerous for diabetic patients. Dehydration can increase blood sugar levels because the amount of glucose in the body increases, but due to lack of water, it is not able to dilute. In such a situation, the patient must keep drinking water from time to time.
According to the experts, extreme heat can affect the quality of insulin doses. If insulin is not kept in the fridge or not stored at the right temperature, then its effect starts decreasing. Insulin efficacy starts decreasing at temperatures above 25°C. Due to this, the patient's blood sugar is not controlled despite taking the right dose. In such a situation, it is very important to be careful about insulin doses.
In summer, people usually avoid going out and start walking or exercising less. This reduces body activity and sugar levels start increasing. Diabetic patients should do light physical activity in the morning or evening even in summer so that the sugar level remains balanced. Apart from this, in summer, diabetes patients drink things like cold drinks, ice cream, and sherbet. These things can increase blood sugar immediately. Due to less appetite in summer, many people skip meals, which can cause low sugar. Diabetic patients need to take a balanced diet on time.
Not only this, the reading of the blood sugar meter can also come wrong in summer if it is not stored at the right temperature. Never keep the device in a very hot or very cold place. Also, store medicines as per the doctor's advice, otherwise their effectiveness may be affected. If you want to control diabetes in the summer season, then you should drink an adequate amount of water, take food on time and continue light physical activity. Keep insulin or medicines at the right temperature and avoid sunlight. Keep checking blood sugar regularly. If there is a problem, consult a doctor.
