Seasonal changes bring shifts in temperature and humidity, which can significantly affect ear health. During this time, bacteria and viruses tend to multiply faster inside the ear, making infections more likely. Common seasonal issues like cold, cough, flu, or nasal congestion can alter ear pressure, leading to discomfort, heaviness, or pain. Early symptoms often include mild ear pain, ringing sounds, slight hearing difficulty, or watery discharge. These infections are more common among children, older adults, and those with weak immunity. If you experience severe pain, dizziness, or constant heaviness in the ear, you should consult a doctor immediately to prevent complications.
Apart from infections, weather fluctuations can cause earwax buildup, pressure imbalance, and echoing sensations. Cold winds directly hitting the ears—especially while riding a bike—can also trigger irritation. Additionally, sinus and throat infections that rise during seasonal changes can further impact ear health. Without proper care, these issues can worsen quickly and lead to more serious ear problems.
How to Prevent and Treat Ear Infections During Weather Changes
According to Dr. Subhash Giri from the Department of Medicine at RML Hospital, the key is to protect your ears from sudden temperature changes. Always cover your ears while riding a two-wheeler and avoid direct exposure to cold air. Don’t ignore symptoms of a cold or cough, as they can easily aggravate ear infections.
Avoid inserting cotton buds deep into your ears or over-cleaning them, as this may cause irritation or injury. If your doctor prescribes ear drops or medication, complete the full course. Keep your ears dry during bathing and avoid getting water inside.
For mild discomfort, applying a warm compress, staying hydrated, and resting can help ease pain. In children, constant ear pulling, restlessness, or unexplained crying may indicate an ear infection — these signs should not be ignored. If there’s no improvement within 1–2 days, or you experience dizziness or worsening symptoms, visit your doctor promptly.
Additional Tips for Ear Care:
-
Avoid inserting sharp objects into the ear.
-
Limit prolonged use of earphones.
-
Keep allergies under control.
-
Maintain strong immunity through a balanced diet and proper sleep.
