A 15-year-old boy and a 54-year-old man were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of arson after a fire at an Indian restaurant in east London left five people seriously burnt.

London: A 15-year-old boy and a 54-year-old man were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of arson after a fire at an Indian restaurant in east London left five people seriously burnt. The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the Indian Aroma Restaurant in Ilford on Friday night. Three women and two men suffered burn injuries and were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service paramedics before being taken to hospital. Two of them, a man and a woman, remain in a critical condition, police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rodgers, of the Metropolitan Police's Central Specialist Crime North Unit, said: "We have made two arrests in connection with the case. Our investigation is continuing at a rapid pace to try and unravel the mystery of what happened on Friday evening. The suspects were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and remain in police custody. There was a heavy police presence in the Woodford Avenue, Gants area, where the restaurant is located, over the weekend.

"There are believed to be two further victims who left the scene before officers arrived. Efforts are ongoing to identify them," police said. The fire caused extensive damage to the restaurant. Some reports showed CCTV footage of masked men entering the restaurant and pouring liquid on the floor before the fire broke out. "We sent a team of paramedics to the scene and treated five people suffering from burn injuries and asphyxiation. We took two patients to a major trauma centre and three others to local hospitals," the London Fire Service said. The London Fire Service said it was investigating the cause of the fire.
