An appliance expert has revealed the most common mistake people make while using their air fryers. While air fryers provide a quicker and often healthier and more energy-efficient way of cooking many foods, making certain errors can affect the quality of your food.
It can even damage the appliance itself, with many users unknowingly shortening the lifespan of their gadget. Isabella Forgione,AO's small appliance expert, said: "The biggest mistake people make is misusing oil and cooking sprays. Air fryers work by circulating hot air around the food, so technically, you don't need oil to cook.
"But if you're after that golden, crispy finish, a little oil can go a long way if used correctly."
She recommended applying oil or cooking spray directly to the food before putting it into the air fryer, rather than spraying it inside the air fryer, explaining: "This helps crisp up items like vegetables or breaded snacks without damaging the non-stick coating."
This will help to reduce the amount of spray touching your appliance and protect the non-stick coating from being damaged.
The warning comes as many popular cooking sprays contain additives and propellants that can degrade the air fryer's interior over time.
"It's important to check the ingredients in your spray," she added. "Some can cause long-term damage if they come into direct contact with the appliance."
She said you should always clean your air fryer thoroughly after each use, adding: "It's the best way to keep it performing at its best and to make sure your meals stay deliciously crisp."

First, make sure your air fryer is unplugged and cool. Then, remove the basket, tray and any other removable components and wash with warm, soapy water.
Be sure to use a cloth or non-abrasive sponge to avoid damaging the non-stick coating.
Finally, wipe down the interior and exterior with a damp cloth, paying attention to any areas with food residue or grease buildup.
Ensure all parts are totally dry before reassembling.
