A former cruise ship employee has revealed the suggestive hidden meaning behind passengers who wear black rings onboard. Lucy Southerton, 28, from Birmingham, had worked on cruise ships for over a decade, and shared her findings in a video she uploaded on Youtube back in 2023.
In the video, which has now gained over 1 million views and hundreds of comments, she exposed that black and pineapple-themed jewellery are indicators that the person is a swinger. Now, it's not to say that it is an official code used by cruise lines, but rather a strategic signal within the swinging community.
Lucy disclosed how exactly she came across this untold information.
She discovered the hidden meaning while working at a spa on one liner. A couple had stripped down and settled in for a massage, when a fellow crew member noticed the pair were wearing matching silver upside-down pineapple necklaces.
She shared how her former colleague complimented the couple on their "cute" matching jewellery, and went on to ask what the pineapples represented.
This prompted the couple to erupt into laughter, before responding: "Look, we're swingers, this is how people can identify us as swingers."
Lucy continued to point out to be a "little bit more cautious" with the black ring, as it doesn't always indicate the wearer is a swinger. When worn on the right hand, it could be a simple fashion statement, so urged cruise passengers from reading into it unless there were other "clear signs".

In the video, Lucy added that the pair got into a conversation with the couple regarding secret terminology and hidden meanings. She quickly learnt of other unconventional ways the swinging community advertise their status on board:
A unicorn - A woman who wants to sleep with a couple
A rhino - A man who wants to sleep with a couple
A mermaid - A married woman who is willing to swing with a couple on her own
A rainbow - Someone who is happy with "anyone and everyone".
People raced to the comment sections to make hilarious comments.
One wrote: "Thanks for the info on the upside down pineapple. I will be placing a sticker of one on my brother and sister in law's cabin door on our upcoming cruise. Boy will they be surprised:)".
Another wrote: "Holy crap, my wife and I saw an upside down pineapple on our last Princess cruise and we thought 'oh that is a fun looking ornament'."
