Liverpool have four different ways to take revenge on Newcastle if their pursuit of Alexander Isak proves unsuccessful. The Reds have looked to open talks to sign the striker in a deal worth in excess of £120million, but it appears unlikely that those negotiations will bear fruit at this stage.
The Magpies are insistent that they are not looking to sell Isak this summer and plan for the ex-Real Sociedad star to spearhead their attack next season, which will come much to the frustration of Arne Slot's side. However, they could get their own back in four different ways over the coming weeks...
Sign Hugo EkitikeLiverpool have already handed Newcastle a subtle ultimatum: sell them Isak or they will steal Ekitike from their grasp. The Magpies are locked in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt over a deal for the Frenchman and have already seen an offer rejected for his services, and the Reds are monitoring the situation closely as he is also considered a target. If their move for Isak is unsuccessful, they could deny Eddie Howe's side the chance to play him alongside Ekitike as planned.
Snatch Marc Guehi from Toon graspNewcastle and Liverpool are both long-term admirers of Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, and the defender could be on the move this summer. The Magpies have seen several bids to sign the England international rejected over the last 12 months, and he remains a target. However, Slot must replace Jarell Quansah and has shortlisted Guehi as his ideal upgrade, and acquiring his services would be a hammer blow on Tyneside.
Liverpool pushed to sign Newcastle's Anthony Gordon previously, and they could look to turn his head once again. With Luis Diaz looking to leave the Merseyside outfit, the England international is likely to come into the Reds' thinking once again and there were no suggestions previously that Gordon would reject an approach. A big-money bid would give the Magpies plenty to think about.
Newcastle target heads elsewhereHarvey Elliott has been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside in recent weeks, but Liverpool have the power to send him elsewhere. Brighton, West Ham and a host of European outfits are keen on the versatile playmaker, and if talks for Isak prove unsuccessful then the higher powers at Liverpool may feel they have good reason not to do Howe's side a favour by negotiating a deal for the England Under-21 star.
