Manchester United's pursuit of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo has received a significant boost after a reported second bid for the forward. After netting 20 Premier League goals last season, Mbeumo has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, with United keen to make the Cameroon international their second signing of the transfer window following the triggering of Matheus Cunha's £62.5million release clause.
United's initial offer of £45m plus £10m in add-ons was rebuffed earlier this month. It is believed that Mbeumo favours a move to United over Tottenham, although an agreement with Brentford is yet to be reached. The Red Devils are now set to bow to a demand made by the Bees. According to the Evening Standard, Brentford are insisting on receiving the majority of the fee upfront. United have now tabled a bid exceeding £60m.
Brentford are keen to secure a substantial upfront payment rather than allowing their star player to depart via a staggered payment structure. However, United's obligation to adhere to financial regulations could complicate matters. Initially, United had planned to spread the payment of Cunha's release clause over five years before agreeing to Wolves' terms of three instalments over two seasons.
This could pave the way for Tottenham and Thomas Frank to pursue a move for the Dane's former star player. Spurs have been rumoured to be considering a reunion between Mbeumo and Frank after he departed the Gtech Community Stadium for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month.
Having triumphed over United in the Europa League to secure a Champions League spot, Spurs are better equipped to meet Brentford's demands.
However, reports of United's offer suggest that Amorim's squad is ready to comply with the conditions set by Brentford to bring Mbeumo on board. It remains uncertain whether the Bees will accept the revised proposal.
