Sky News delivered a huge update today as American President Donald Trump shared some "great" news. Regular broadcasting was interrupted as the news channel announced that Trump had confirmed that the US and the EU have made a trade deal.
The show cut to a short speech from the USA politician, where he explained what had happened. The announcement was made as the US president met European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen at one of his golf resorts in Scotland. The 79-year-old leader said: "So I just want to congratulate you. I think it's great that we made a deal today and didn't play games instead of maybe not making a deal at all. As you say, it is the biggest deal ever made. Thank you very much." He and Ms von der Leyen then shook hands as they were met with a round of applause.
The deal will see a blanket tariff of 15% on all EU goods imported to the US, after the EU had been threatened with import charges of 30%, which would have kicked in on Friday.
The agreement also includes promises of billions of dollars worth of investment and energy purchases from Brussels. Trump said the deal will be "great for cars", and will have a big impact on agriculture.
Von der Leyen, who flew in at short notice to meet Trump, said: "It was heavy lifting we had to do. But many thanks also for the talks we had many times on the way to our goal - but now we made it."
Ahead of their meeting on Sunday, Ms von der Leyen described Mr Trump as a "tough negotiator and dealmaker". Before reaching an agreement today, Donald Trump furiously complained about the EU's "very unfair" trade relationship with the US.
The EU was readily prepared for a lack of a deal today. Expecting the US to impose 30% tariffs from 1 August, they prepared counter-tariffs on €93bn (£81bn) of US goods.
Trump noted today that he is "looking at three or four other countries" to strike deals with as well, but that they will most likely include some form of tariffs.
