There's not much worse than discovering your tomatoes covered in mould. No matter how carefully you try to store them, tomatoes often go from juicy and delicious one day to mushy and spoilt the next. Keeping them fresh for more than a few days can feel impossible, but one simple trick changes everything.

According to DIY and home and food storage expert TracyTips, on YouTube, with just a little care and the right storage method, you can keep your tomatoes fresh and filled with flavour for up to two months. Storing tomatoes properly in ziplock bags with a few easy steps can extend their life without sacrificing taste or texture.

Before storing your tomatoes, gently rinse them under cool water to remove any dirt or residue.

It's crucial to dry them completely; moisture is the enemy of freshness and encourages mould growth. Use a clean towel or let them air dry fully before moving on.

Grab a clean, dry ziplock bag and line the inside with a sheet of dry paper towel.

This extra layer absorbs any natural moisture the tomatoes release while stored, stopping them from becoming soggy and spoiling too quickly.

Once dried, place the tomatoes inside the bag, spacing them out so none get bruised or squished.

Since oxidation speeds up spoilage, removing as much air as possible from the bag is essential.

A clever method recommended by the DIY expert is to use a drinking straw. Insert it into the bag's opening and gently suck out the air.

To seal the bag tightly, you can create a quick vacuum seal using a cut-up plastic bottle and a hairdryer.

If you don't have these, just be sure to remove as much air as possible before sealing the bag securely. Then, place the ziplock bag in the fridge, preferably on a lower shelf where it is colder than the rest of the fridge.
